Nomenclature Notes:

Narcissus papyraceus (from papyrus; meaning paper like), hence the name Paperwhite. A narcissus related to the daffodil, and native to the Mediterranean region, paper whites do not require chilling like other bulbs to bloom. Very fragrant, Paperwhites are often forced to flower during the holiday season.

How to Plant Paper Whites Indoors
Planting Instructions
  1. Purchase paper white bulbs that are firm and free from mold or mildew. remove from bag and set in a dark area until planting.

  2. Select a decorative pot, shallow bowl, or platter to use for planting. Paperwhites will grow in very little soil or even rocks, How to force paperwhitesthere fore you can be creative with your choice of container.

  3. Fill the container with a 1" - 2: layer of soil or stones. 

  4. Place the bulbs, root s facing downward, in groups of 3 to 5 or more if you want a 'bouquet' look on the planting medium.

  5. Push the bulbs down so that the planting medium supports the bulbs, but does not cover them. Add a thin layer of soil or pebbles to further anchor them, making sure that the top 1/3 of the bulbs are exposed to the air. 

  6. Add water until the level reaches just below the base of the bulbs, but no higher, (if the bases of the bulbs sit in water, they will rot).

  7. Set your container or vase in a cool (50-60°F is ideal) place away from direct sunlight. Once roots take hold, and the plant has sprung from the bulb, take the pot out into a brightly lit room. Four to six weeks later, your Paper Whites will be in bloom.
